If you love the symphony and also have a deep adoration for musical theatre, there was no better place to be than at Auditorium Theatre on Friday night. The Boston Pops made a stop on their Midwestern tour to entrance an audience.

Auditorium Theatre Brings Beauty

The first half of the evening was a symphonic tribute to the work of George Gershwin. The audience was treated to the playfulness of An American in Paris, as well as an alluring rendition of Rhapsody in Blue.

Lilting blue lighting dramatically enhanced Rhapsody. At one point, the lights were so perfectly placed, that all that could be seen was a reflection from the piano being played masterfully by soloist Michael Chertock.

A True Broadway Legend

After an intermission, Bernadette Peters finally made her appearance. As stated in her opening number, Let Me Entertain You, she is versatile. She teased the audience with her sexy vocals in Fever. She then proceeded to bring the entire theatre to a staggering standstill with an enrapturing version of No One Is Alone. Ms. Peters has powers beyond her world-famous vocals. Her ability to hold an audience within a small spotlight in the middle of a stage is stunning.

In support of her work as an animal rights activist, Ms. Peters closed the show with an irresistible song she wrote for her dog. She used this opportunity to walk slowly through the audience. If anyone was not already in love with her by this point, this moment must have won them over. Her sparkly dress coupled with those warm lyrics would make the coldest heart thaw. If you ever have any chance to see her perform, jump at it quickly.

There wasn’t an empty seat in the house. It's difficult to imagine that anyone left the Auditorium Theatre wanting - except maybe for encores that never end.
