Knitting his brows in consternation, the bank teller said, “It doesn’t matter where I watch it. It only matters that they win…”

 Like so many others in Cusco that day, the day before and the days after, he wore a futbal (soccer) jersey.

To be in Peru November 2017 was to feel our team making that win and qualifying for the World Cup games in Russia. Peru’s team did not get further than this, but this is a win to savor for years-- a window on the love Peruvians feel for their country.

This off-season month for tourism, has also had its share of on and off rain. But off-season means first and foremost a time to see Peru with fewer fellow tourists with whom you have to jostle for views. That said, thinner tourists numbers were certainly hard to believe in the selfie gridlock at Machu Picchu.
