The Al Hirschfeld Foundation’s The Dog Show: Hounds by Hirschfeld features drawings of dogs by Hirschfeld between 1924-2001. The exhibit includes depictions of some of the most famous dogs in 20th-century media and some not-so-famous dogs who were well-loved by their humans, says an Al Hirschfeld spokesperson. Canines are the focus of this exhibition, including the artist’s reflections of The Thin Man, “Frasier”, “Lassie”, The Wiz, Annie, Gypsy, The Will Rogers Follies, and more.
Dogs appear in drawings in nearly every category of the artist’s work, including theatre, film, television, music, and literature. This exhibit also includes examples of Hirschfeld’s emphasis on politics, private commissions, and his earliest lithographs. The dogs seen in this exhibit have been sorted by breed, just as they are in shows. There are breeds from each of the seven American Kennel Club groups represented: Sporting, Working, Terrier, Hound, Toy, Herding, and Non-Sporting.
