Film Maudit 2.0 Festival Presents THERE WERE FOUR OF US Film Review — A Dream Sequence

Four people seated around a table discuss and share stories in There Were Four of Us, a film comprised of a dream sequence with neon, colorful animation and unique, otherworldly dialogue.

“One day I dreamed that I couldn’t wake up from layers and layers of dreams.”

Cassie Shao’s There Were Four of Us transports us to an animated universe with shapeshifting characters and settings and distant, wistful narration. The sounds of trickling water and a burning candle flame complement the fluid animation as one of the four characters retells her dream sequence in which she found forgotten toys and ordered a perfect scoop of ice cream.

In this writer’s opinion, anyone searching for a short, animated film with the ability to present a distinctive and immersive world will enjoy There Were Four of Us and its pleasing animation style. There Were Four of Us is full of imaginative scenery and provides a different experience for us as we wonder about the characters and their bright-colored reality.
