Marighella, a film about Afro-Brazilian poet and politician Carlos Marighella, banned in Brazil, is presented by HotHouse as a benefit screening event launching their Year of Edcation/Paulo Freire Centenary. The film stars actor/musician Seu Jorge in the title role—a performer described by a HotHouse spokesperson as a longtime favorite of HotHouse audiences—in a narrative that tells the story of his struggles against Brazil’s military dictatorship under Pinochet that has enduring resonance.
HotHouse’s Year of Education/Paulo Freire Centenery is a multidisciplinary series of documentary and feature films, music (samba and more), symposia and other public programming celebrating the legacy of the philosopher and teacher Paulo Freire, known for his seminal work Pedagogy of the Oppressed.
