Beginning July 13, The Morton Arboretum presents Walking Plays, an interactive, outdoor theatrical experience. After a  run of The Brothers Grimm Woodland Tales last summer, the Arboretum debuts  three new walking plays for 2019.

Written by Lara Filip and performed by the Arranmore Arts Professional Ensemble, this year’s lineup includes adaptations of three literary tales.  With the Arboretum’s 1,700 acres of trees and landscapes serving as the stage and scenery, performers and audience members will hike up to two miles, from one scene to another, throughout each performance.

Running approximately 90 minutes, the Walking Plays will feature tales and characters including:

Hans Christian Andersen: July 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28 -- 6:00 p.m.

Hans Christian Andersen and his unexpected traveling companions are spirited away to the woods where he will engage audiences with a comedic re-imagining of some of the world’s most beloved fairy tales.

Alice Through the Looking Glass: August 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25 --  6:00 p.m.

Find out what happens when Alice is taken from her garden, back into the fantasy land of Through the Looking-Glass, told with new twists and turns and filled with new and classic characters.

Holmes and Watson’s Mystery of the Woods: October 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27 -- 3:00 p.m.

In the world premiere of this adaptation, the female descendants of the beloved characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson find themselves drawn into the woods, with a brand-new mystery to solve.

Each month a Low Impact Hike and an American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation performance are scheduled. Low Impact hikes are designed for guests with lower mobility; the hike covers a much shorter distance, and tries to stay near paved paths wherever possible. Low Impact hikes are scheduled for July 21, August 18, and October 13. ASL interpretation performances are a full hike with an interpreter walking along with the actors. ASL interpretation performances are July 20, August 17, and October 12. Additional accessibility accommodations can also be requested.

Tickets:
