A spokesperson describes the event as follows:
“...Riitta Ikonen’s distinctive collection of 51 mail art postcards, created from materials found on Governors Island—acorns, oyster shells, ferry floors, clay, stinkhorn mushrooms, forgotten sun hats—each spun through the international postal system. These artworks narrate a story, forging a tangible connection between the sender and the receiver.
The exhibition spotlights Ikonen's ongoing collaboration with UK based artist Michael Crowe. The Governors Island ferry serves as a thematic element, studio space, and material source for their exchange across waters. During the ferry rides to and from the island, Ikonen observes, reports, and notates in real time to Crowe about charismatic, underwear free ferry personnel, missing floor patterns, out of body experiences, oyster sightings, mudbathing, and both usual and unusual bird behavior. Crowe then expands on these scenes, resulting in handwritten correspondence that delves into rich details, offering visitors a glimpse into the island’s sideline narratives. The artworks are stories and postcard sized sculptures, painted on the ferry floor during the eight minute rides between Manhattan and Governors Island.
This project honors Governors Island’s rich history and evolving nature while highlighting the enduring power of art to connect people across distances. The artists’ postcards add a deeply personal and poetic dimension to the exhibition, encouraging visitors to engage with the island’s unique narrative in a meaningful way..."
