COPENHAGEN Picture Postcard — A Scandinavian Gem

COPENHAGEN
COPENHAGEN PICTURE POSTCARD
Like a painter’s palette, the ripples in the canal create an artwork of its own, combining the facade’s vivid shades.

Copenhagen is home to an unpoliced, graffiti-riddled freetown, boasts more bicycles than residents, and is the city where Hans Christian Andersen’s storybook imagination was born. Take a step into the Danish capital.

Local police turn a blind eye to Christiania, a self-governed, marijuana-friendly neighborhood in the heart of Denmark’s capital. The unmistakable landmark restricts photography in spots and serves as the antithesis to the scrupulously-run streets just blocks away.
The work of Thomas Dambo seems to embody the personality of Christiania. His wooden trolls are sprinkled throughout Denmark and have even found their way outside the country’s borders--from the United States to China. Each troll carries a story of its origin.
Square buildings with evenly-lined windows and protruding street lamps on a narrow, cobblestone street capped with a spiraling church – a common theme in Copenhagen.
Ships sidle up against the tourist-riddled waterfront of Nyhavn.
Like its Scandinavian siblings, Copenhagen is dominated by red and black roofs separated by the occasional spire piercing the sky.
Some might describe the Christiana commune as a hallucinogenic experience.
It’s impossible for one to be in Christiania without knowing they’re in Christiania, where the art fulfills every hippie stereotype.
Nyhayn’s multicolored buildings remind of a child’s storybook . Perhaps emphasized to you when you learn that Hans Christian Anderson once called this area home.
The expansive City Hall Square airs out the bustle of Copenhagen’s narrow streets. It takes more than a few 360° twirls to take in all that the heart of the Danish capital offers.
The gold-rimmed staircases of the baroque Church of Our Savior is open to tourists, despite the steep and harrowing appearance.
Since 1873, King Frederick II has been immortalized in front of Christiansborg Palace, appearing on horseback with a gaze set skyward.
Bicycles are synonymous with Copenhagen. Seldom does one find a street in the city without a line of bikes waiting patiently for their owners to return.
Round and round the Round Tower goes. Unbroken white walls and curved roofs lead to a bird’s eye view of Copenhagen.
Calm, narrow waterways branching off from the Port of Copenhagen snake through the city.
Concealing a sinking sun, Christiansborg Palace is an authoritative presence inside and out, housing the Danish Prime Minister’s Office and the Supreme Court of Denmark.
