If you too walk into the Joyce Theater after seeing the nearby Sixties Surreal exhibit at the Whitney, MOMIX delivers their critique of the art exhibit like a 2 x 4 hitting your head. The Whitney curators surely missed the trippy feeling of the decade. MOMIX, in contrast, distilled Grace Slick’s call to psychedelic wonder in her song Go Ask Alice, the final music of the evening, into a concentrated time machine injection.
We are awestruck from the very beginning when the title character Alice multiplies before our eyes. It continues for 90 minutes with our minds constantly fighting detours asking “How did they do that?? There’s so much wonder and yet no time to wonder because the spectacle just keeps coming and coming.
In MOMIX’ hands, gravity seems optional and kaleidoscope imagery are a part of the visual buffet that just keeps coming and coming.
A red-fringed aerial dancer merges with her silks. Ensembles of snails, door mice and Queens of Hearts, Spades and Clubs come to life. Skateboards carry dancers carrying a dancer in split after split. Cans come to life. Spider webs ensnare us.
We have crawled down the rabbit hole and found waves of visual splendor.
It’s only when the dancers take their bows that we get to see the indispensable glue holding this magic act together. STRONG! These are torsos built to withstand tornado challenges.
WOW! WOW! WOW!
Joyce Theater Hosts MOMIX Regularly
This is an especially top pick for family entertainment. Unlike this writer, dance purists who adore lavishing in the elegant detailing of poses and gestures on pointe or not, might not find MOMIX a top pick. For this rest of us— MOMIX seems to shout - YOU GOTTA SEE US AT LEAST ONCE!
