“...Korngold was an Austrian-Jewish composer and conductor forced into exile in Hollywood by the rise of the Nazis. Already a celebrated prodigy in Europe, he found a second career as one of the most influential film composers during Hollywood's Golden Age, a move widely believed to have saved his life. He won two Academy Awards (for Anthony Adverse and The Adventures of Robin Hood), solidifying his legacy as a pioneer of the symphonic Hollywood film score.
The Silent Serenade was written in the late 1940s—after Korngold’s celebrated Hollywood tenure. Based on a short story by Austrian writer Raoul Auernheimer, the operetta is a romantic farce brimming with mistaken identities, amorous intrigue, and glittering melodies.

Korngold composed a nimble, delicious orchestration for a Broadway pit. The fizzy plot shows a strong influence from the Hollywood movie musicals of the time, with young lovers, spunky reporters, dancing girls, sassy maids—and even a revolutionary political twist, overthrowing the monarchy for the will of the people.
But after a troubled production history—including an aborted Shubert Brothers run—the piece slipped into obscurity..."
