A spokesperson says---
“...Pagliacci tells the poignantly unfortunate story of a commedia dell’arte troupe forced to perform despite enormous personal tragedy and upheaval. The opera was very well-received upon its premiere in Milan in 1892 and remains the work for which Leoncavallo is best known. Its most famous aria “Vesti la giubba” (“Put on the costume”), is regarded as one of the greatest in the tenor repertoire and has been quoted or featured in many TV shows and movies including The Marx Brothers, Sein-feld, and the original Batman series.
This production was originally staged in 2024 by Stage Director Brenna Corner at The Glimmerglass Festival in Otsego Lake, New York. Corner’s concept positions the story as a series of recollections by the character Tonio, who opens the opera by appealing to the audience to remember that per-formers experience the same joys and sorrows as other people..."
