High density creativity….
That’s the thought that came at this reviewer with tidal wave force while watching Theatre Temoin & Grafted Cede Theatre’s exposé of a war veteran’s PTSD infused mind in NOBODY'S HOME. Serious subject matter, for sure—but you too may find yourself having difficulty keeping a smile under wraps as you watch these two talented actors re-tell Homer’s Odyssey in physical theater storytelling style.
On one level we are living in the home of a returned vet and his pregnant wife watching how his PTSD has taken a toll on their lives and marriage. In the center of their domestic world- and the stage- is the bathtub that he seems unable to fix, showcasing just how broken he is. It actually is also quite a miraculous set piece that somehow allows for hidden entrances and exits. In an instant ‑that the sound and light design helps create in a blink‑ the two actor/dancers transport us and lock us into the claustrophobia of his addled PTSD trapped mind.
In the interests of sparing you spoilers—know that you DO see memorable Poisedon waves, siren song moments, monsters and a brilliant Cyclops/psychotherapist, and more—as the Odyssey unfolds. But it’s HOW they use their physical theater mojo to tell the tale in a riveting hour that makes this a top pick for your time.
This was the kickoff to the 5th Annual Physical Festival Chicago and will be performed also in the next few days. This writer can’t think of a better lure to intrigue you in a ticket to the entire festival.
