Refuge Theatre Project THE LAST SESSION Review – One Final Recording Session

Endless doctor visits...
Barely effective treatment...
Pain for you and your loved ones...

During the height of the AIDS crisis, many people were left in this situation which looked like nothing but a bleak future ahead of them. The same pain was felt by artist Steve Schalchlin when he wrote THE LAST SESSION. Channeling his own experience into music, Schalchlin created this musical to give audience’s a look into a man’s struggle with this disease.

Refuge Theatre in the Recording Studio

A lone piano sits onstage with chairs and microphones next to it in anticipation of more joining this late night recording session. Gideon, played by Erik Pearson, enters and sits at the piano, beginning the first of his songs he plans to record tonight. As his close friends arrive to record with him, little do they know this will be his final album for he plans on ending his battle with AIDS the very next day.

Darilyn Burtley as “Tryshia”

With the unexpected arrival of Buddy, the night could go awry as he constantly enters a “theological chess match” trying to argue his religious beliefs with Gideon. Will the night continue on as planned leaving a beautiful album behind in Gideon’s memory? Or perhaps will their connections run too deep and allow for one more song?

Original Music and Voices To Carry

The music written by Schalchlin carries many stories of Gideon’s life and the cast’s voices rock the intimate space in Atlas Art Studio. Erik Pearson pulls at our heartstrings with his touching monologues and songs for Gideon’s husband.Though Buddy may be hesitant to record, Ryan Armstrong shows no restraint when he’s put front and center.

Liz Bollar as Vicki kills it with frustration and anger coming through her voice when she leads “Somebody’s Friend.”

And when that 11 o’clock showstopping number, “The Singer and the Song,” is sung by Darilyn Burtley playing Tryshia, it’s a powerful reminder the connections and love everyone has for each other.

These four, in this writer's view,  work seamlessly together in harmony to leave the audience wanting to hear these songs again and again.

Emotions Run Deep

Though their voices are the stars, the raw, emotional performances delivering the words of this show are equally as moving. Each of the cast members leave it all on stage. We feel Gideon’s pain and anger, Vicki and Tryshia’s hurt, and Buddy’s internal conflict of faith.

These more painful emotions are only one aspect, however. The humor and punchiness of the cast balances out the more tearful moments in the show.

It’s a powerful story, not just in this moment with Gideon and his friends, but also in the stories within his songs - the support groups, the endless medicines and doctors, and the toll it takes on loved ones. It’s a look inside the lives of those affected by the disease.

THE LAST SESSION is a touching musical and a good fit for those who like intimate shows that deal with more serious issues and tap into your emotions. It might not be the best fit for those looking for a huge Broadway production or a lighter night out at the theatre.
