On July 17 Wave Hill continues their Sunset Wednesdays performance series with Sweet Megg & The Wayfarers performing NYC Hot Jazz, Blues and Western Swing.  Here, Picture this Post (PTP) catches up with Sweet Megg (SM) herself!

(PTP) How and when did Sweet Megg & The Wayfarers get started?

(SM) Sweet Megg & the Wayfarers is a group I've put together to focus on all the old-time jazz, blues and country that I love.  We do a lot of jazz standards, old blues tunes, western swing numbers, and even some straight up country.  I have written a few originals for the group and we will be performing them.  Our sound is a mix of gut bucket blues, New Orleans Jazz, and Western Swing.

Six years ago I started off very different as just a 4pc band doing lots of gypsy jazz and swing music.  Since then I've grown so much as a musician and I've learned so much about playing and what I want.  It has taken six years to discover the sound and I feel like I've finally landed on something that brings out me.

Who is your typical fan base?

We draw a wide range of folks.  When we perform in Brooklyn our audience is often filled with folks our age who have heard us at this bar or that bar and have enjoyed the sound.  I think a lot of times when folks hear us they've never really heard anything like it and are generally pleased!  Outside of New York we have a lot of fans in the swing dance community as I've performed at dances up and down the East Coast.  We also have a large contingent of older folks, baby boomers, and such who love our sound and have helped support our group.

Who are the musicians in your group?

The musicians in the group fluctuate based on what I'm going for particularly that evening.   This performance will have five people in it.  We will be performing our Dixieland/Western Swing version of the group, which is my favorite.  The group features Bass Sax, Violin, Trumpet, Drums and myself playing Tenor guitar and singing.

Have you performed at Wave Hill before?  How are you adapting to an outdoor setting?

I have not and I"m excited to play!  I've had some friends who have played there and really enjoyed it.

We've actually done many events outdoors like this one.  I've done a lot of busking in my lifetime so I'm pretty good at an outdoor setting.

What are your future gigs and plans?

We are going on a big tour in Russia in October and are releasing an album before then.  I will be advertising the release party very soon it will probably be around October 18th.

Other than that you can find us at our home base in Brooklyn St. Mazie's or if you are in Nashville I play Rudy's Jazz Room once a month and in Asheville I perform at the Crow & Quill on August 2nd!
