Nothing grows anymore. Convinced music will make the earth green again, Bronwyn plays her cello in an abandoned greenhouse surrounded by dead plants. The strings of her cello crescendo, summoning green things to grow again. Once she plays the last note, breathless and arm sore, she reaches out to touch a dead plant and finds the leaves to be stronger than they were before.

Could she be right about the saving power of music?

In a world of never-ending snowfall and ruffians, it’s too cold and dangerous to go outside. Desperate for love, Bronwyn does anyway, triggering a chain of disastrous events. Throughout this audio musical, she searches for a red rose for a young man she’s in love with, a seemingly hopeless job in a barren world. Regardless of the difficulty of this task, Bronwyn is lit by burning love as she persists in her quest. Her energy is contagious, bringing us to believe in the power of love and music as every step she takes toward the red rose is underscored by her cello’s melody.

Broadway Podcast Network Tells a Tale of Warmth in the Cold

With music by Arthur Lafrentz Bacon and lyrics by Harris Doran, each song reveals how desperate each character is to live with love in a post-apocalyptic world. Bronwyn, a true romantic, meets Puppy, a young man next door. Excitement catches in her voice when he asks her to teach him how to play the cello. When he places his hand on hers to pull the bow across the strings, she can barely speak. Their hushed and awestruck voices complement the strings of the cello, leading them to feel warmth in the coldest of environments.

There are no images to look at to imagine this musical but, in this writer’s opinion, visuals aren’t necessary to get the full effect, especially not when the music in Bleeding Love carries hope and love in every note.

Bleeding Love is suitable for those interested in an audio musical about the search for love, hope, and music when all seems lost. However, those looking for a musical with visuals should search elsewhere.
