“...LIVE PERFORMANCE
16 premieres new work in progress: Quilted P{a}Lace, and features a short sampling from bloom (2023), part of dropshift’s Sense Series. Quilted P{a}Lace is a memory palace of dance that explores themes of volume and quilted comfort. The mover uses visualizations of place to inspire choreographic choice. Improvised moments mesh with arranged phrase work to craft a unique iteration with each performance. The dance is altered based on how the mover spontaneously connects with a visualization of each place. Improvisation is layered amongst choreographic structures that ground the work and maintain an arc of energy and flow. A work in progress for 1 dancer, Quilted P{a}Lace uses the images of place as a portal to a dreamlike journey of physicality that explores active stillness as recuperation.

Each mover works with a vibrant & whimsical fabric that drapes, collides, and has an organic quality- one that is inevitable and spontaneously beautiful. Moments experienced with the fabrics are wild and sometimes unpredictable. At times, movers use the fabrics in tandem to catapult a body and stop at moments to create organic sculptures that consume one body at a time. This is performed as a structured improvisation built from hours of studio practice.
VIDEO ESSAY SCREENINGS 16:
Andrea Cerniglia and Chicago based video artist Andrew Henke produce a 4-part video essay series that catalogues 16 years of dancemaking. These conversations provide a window into the artistic process and highlight dropshift’s unique approach to collaboration and innovation. The video essays will screen in multiple spaces throughout Colvin as a durational installation throughout the event..."
