RedBird Theater Company Presents REVOLUTION Review — Humanity on the Edges

Many in the audience have probably never known people like the three women we meet in an alley behind a shopping mall’s hair salon.  Nor would we consider the concrete surrounds as an inviting venue for a birthday celebration.

As it turns out, this back alley meeting place just might be the most perfect place on earth to follow the shared preoccupations of birthday girl Puff (played by Lindsey Womack) and her BFF Jame (played by Akili Holder-Cozart).  They are like squealing valley girls who inhabit a secret universe of two that we quickly come to realize helps protect them from ravages within and beyond. Their twosome world is populated by the arcanery of their shared frame of reference—e.g. the darker meanings of misogynistic Marvel comic characters, or the coolness of saying “weed” instead of marijuana, and the shortlist of survival tips bequeathed to them by mental health counselors. It’s not just two friends sharing an inside joke— they share an entire quirky and seemingly impenetrable universe.

Enter Georgia (played by Lucia Foster) who emerges from behind a dumpster en route to her car, passing the border of this hermetically-sealed BFF world. She is a somewhat older woman with enough money to be a quasi-regular at the relatively posh Rainforest Cafe. She also has an uncanny ability to do spot-on impressions of the Marvel characters that so fascinate Puff and Jame. And she has a lot of mileage

Each alone is hanging by a thread — as fragile as we come.  Intertwined they have strength— or at least enough stamina to plow through to another day.

RedBird Theater Company Stages a Work About Our Shared Humanity

Playwright Brett Neveu’s script deftly grabs us by the hand to share in this evening  journey when the twosome becomes a threesome. We find our shared humanity in this back alley— which turns out to be a place where generosity of spirit reigns supreme.  By story’s end, we not only come to KNOW these characters —who at first seemed so very foreign —to now be as familiar as the girls next door.

At the time of this review ,RedBird Theater Company’s website announces all remaining performances are sold out.  Like Revolution, All RedBird plays Picture This Post has reviewed have been home runs.  You can find information on future RedBird performances on the RedBird Theater Company website.
