A spokesperson says---

"...Pottery from the Collection showcases work from Tennessee's three grand divisions...allowing visitors to observe the regional styles that emerged across the state. A variety of different forms are on display, highlighting both utilitarian pieces as well as expressive designs displaying the potters’ artistry.

Pottery has been a long-standing part of Tennessee’s craft history, with potters working in the region prior to statehood. Tennessee’s clay deposits provided the materials necessary for production, and communities formed as craftspeople settled near these resources. Several family potteries operated in Tennessee, often carrying through multiple generations. By the late 19th and early 20th century, pottery had become an important commercial product, with potteries industrializing and expanding to produce large volumes of wares..."
